How to Play Poker

Poker is a popular card game where players compete for money. In a typical game, players bet money into the middle of the table, known as the pot. The player with the best hand wins the pot. This betting is done in a clockwise fashion until the last player calls or folds. When a player has the best hand, they may bluff by betting that the opponent does not have a good hand.

When playing poker, a player must have a chip supply of poker chips. At least two hundred chips are needed to play a game with seven or more players. The lowest value chip is a white chip. Other chips have higher value. A red chip is worth five whites, a blue chip is worth ten or twenty-five whites, and a dark chip is worth two, four, or five reds. To start a game, players “buy in” (put money into the pot) by purchasing chips. Most players buy in for the same amount of chips.

After a player’s turn in betting, the game is called a “showdown”. This is the point in the game where each player has a chance to win a pot or the game is over.
