Poker is a game of chance, where each player attempts to get the best hand he can. The aim is to have the highest possible hand using five cards. The player who makes the highest hand takes the pot.
To play the game, each player will have a standard pack of cards. The cards are ranked from Ace to Ten. The cards can be dealt face down or face up.
The game starts with a small bet, known as the ante. This is usually a dime or dollar. The ante is determined by the table. A player can also choose to raise, check, or fold.
The dealer will then deal each player two cards. The dealer’s first card will be a jack. The remaining card is the turn. The player who receives the jack is the player who begins the action.
The dealer will then shuffle the deck and cut the cards. The dealer is the last player to shuffle. The dealer must then offer the shuffled pack to the opponent for cut.
Each player will then have to place in the pot a number of chips equal to the amount of money contributed by the player before him. The bets will then be gathered into a central pot at the end of the round.
At this point, a showdown occurs. When all hands are revealed, the players can either bet, call, or fold. The high card is used to break ties.
