How to Play Poker

Poker is a popular game played with a deck of cards. Players place bets on their cards, hoping to make the best hand. When players are tied, the highest card breaks the tie.

To play poker, each player must make a bet, but may bet to bluff. In some games, a player can discard up to three of his cards. The player can then use one of his cards to form a hand.

Cards are dealt clockwise around the table. The dealer is the last person to shuffle. Once the cards are shuffled, each player has five cards in his hand. A player’s hand is ranked from Ace to Ten.

Some poker games have a wild card. Wild cards take any suit. Occasionally, the game will specify a particular card as a wild card. If the highest card in a hand is a wild card, it wins the pot.

Players must bet or raise, and the highest hand wins. Players may also bluff their way to winning. Sometimes, players re-raise a bet.

The game is usually played with a full 52-card pack. There are a number of variations, including games such as Three-Card Monte and Spit-in-the-Ocean. All the bets are gathered into a central pot at the end of the round.

The first player to make a bet is called the active player. Before the first bet, each player must make an ante. An ante is a small bet, normally $1 or $5.
