The casino business makes its money by charging a percentage of the total amount of bets placed by patrons. This percentage is known as the house edge, and it can vary from game to game. In a card game such as poker, where players compete against the dealer, the house’s advantage is less than two percent; in other games such as roulette and craps, it is much higher. In addition, some casinos make money by giving out complimentary items to gamblers, called comps. These perks are intended to encourage gambling and increase revenue.
